The building is located on a corner site on Kifissias Ave. -one of the main commercial and residential avenues in Athens- at its intersection with Fokidos street in Ambelokipi. Along the avenue the neighboring six storey buildings are mostly from the 50's-60's era. The building could only be developed in height due to the size of the site and the Building Code restrictions.
On Fokidos St. it is set back due to the "allowable volume" that the architect implements from the fourth floor up. The ground floor houses on Kifissias Ave., the stores of Swarovski and Vodafone while, all other floors house offices. The main building entrance lobby and elevator/staircase core is located on Kifissias Ave. On Fokidos is the access to the parking garage via a car lift to its four underground levels.
Alexandros C. Samaras explains that the architectural concept was born from the need for the building to be a reference point and good neighbour manner in the area. The architecture is functional, energy sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Thus the idea of the "sail" was developed, a light yet strong presence. A curved stainless steel net, "the sail", covers the windows on the western façade (on Kifissias Ave.) Nets on both facades are set at a distance from the building yet connected to it through corridors of stainless steel. These nets work as a second semi-transparent skin, a bioclimatic approach to the facades design which also facilitate the maintenance of the glazing surfaces.
